Kyu Iwasaki-tei is the opulent 1896 residence of the Iwasaki family, who founded Mitsubishi. It's centred on a Jacobean-style Western mansion by Josiah Conder, with a Swiss-chalet billiard house and an attached traditional Japanese wing. The mansion and the Japanese wing are open to walk through for 400 yen, and the billiard house opens on a guided tour on the 15th of each month.

About 300 plum trees, most of them white late-blooming varieties, flower in the grounds of this shrine to the god of scholarship, with weekend outdoor tea ceremonies and performances. Students praying for exam success crowd the shrine at the same time, so the atmosphere is part festival, part study hall.
