How live houses work
Most bands in Tokyo play live houses, small rooms with a bar and a stage, often in a basement. A typical night has three or four acts on one bill, and most people stand.
Doors, start and entry numbers
Every listing gives two times. OPEN (開場) is when the doors open and START (開演) is when the first act plays, usually 30 minutes to an hour later. Standing tickets carry an entry number (整理番号) and staff call people in by number, so a low number gets you near the stage. Club nights run later, with doors around 23:00.
Advance and door prices, the drink charge and cash
Prices appear the way venues print them. 前売 or ADV is the advance price and 当日 or DOOR is the price on the night, usually a few hundred yen more. Most live houses also charge for one drink at the door. You'll see it as +1D or ドリンク代別, and at the Shimokitazawa rooms in this list it's often ¥600. Bring cash for it. You get a token to swap at the bar.
Bags and lockers
Bigger live houses have coin lockers (CLUB QUATTRO in Shibuya lists 360) but they can run out on busy nights. Small basements have little room for bags, so travel light.
Where to see live music in Tokyo
Shimokitazawa
The densest cluster of small live houses in the city, a few minutes apart: SHELTER, CLUB Que, DaisyBar, Flowers Loft and the BASEMENTBAR and THREE pair. Most bills are guitar bands, with tickets around ¥2,500 to ¥3,000 plus the drink. Shimokitazawa neighbourhood guide
Shibuya, Ebisu and Daikanyama
The mid-size rooms that book touring bands from abroad: WWW and WWW X, the four Spotify O rooms on Dogenzaka (O-EAST is the biggest) and CLUB QUATTRO. LIQUIDROOM in Ebisu and UNIT in Daikanyama are the next size up, and CIRCUS Tokyo is a club. Shibuya guide
Shinjuku

Koenji and Kichijoji

Roppongi, Aoyama, Ginza and Marunouchi

Big halls and arenas
Big tours play the bay: Zepp DiverCity in Odaiba, Toyosu PIT, Tokyo Ariake Arena and Zepp Haneda by the airport. Tokyo Dome and Kanadevia Hall sit together at Suidobashi. The biggest names sell through fan clubs and ticket-site lotteries months ahead.
Jazz and supper clubs
Blue Note Tokyo, Cotton Club and Billboard Live Tokyo sell seats on their own sites, and most nights have two shows. The music charge covers the show only. Blue Note asks each guest to order at least one item, and Alfie asks for two. Shinjuku Pit Inn includes a drink in its charge and runs morning, afternoon and evening sets, and its morning sets take no reservations. Every jazz gig this month
Clubs and electronic nights
Club nights open around 23:00 and many run until the first train. CIRCUS Tokyo asks for photo ID at the door and turns away anyone under 20 after 22:00, so bring your passport. Spotify O-EAST often follows an early show with an all-night club event. Every club night this month
Buying tickets as a visitor
Every listing here links to the venue's own page, which names where tickets are sold. Jazz clubs sell direct. Live houses and halls sell through e+, Pia, Lawson Ticket, LivePocket or the promoter. Those sites are mostly in Japanese, and some sign-ups ask for a Japanese phone number. Lawson Ticket's site may not load from outside Japan. ZAIKO, which some clubs use, has an English site.
For small shows the simplest route is the door. A listing with a 当日 or DOOR price sells on the night unless it sells out first. Arrive by OPEN and have cash for the ticket and the drink charge.

Where can I see live music in Tokyo tonight?
The list at the top of this page opens on tonight's gigs, taken from the venues' own schedules. Most nights there are 20 or more shows across Shibuya, Shimokitazawa, Shinjuku and the jazz clubs of Roppongi and Aoyama. Filter by genre or area, then check the venue listing for tickets.
What is a live house?
A live house is a small music venue, usually a basement room for a few hundred people standing, with a bar and a stage. Most nights have three or four acts on one bill. You pay the ticket price plus a drink charge at the door.
What does +1D or the drink charge mean?
Most live houses add a one-drink charge to every ticket and take it at the door. At the Shimokitazawa live houses in this list it's often ¥600. You get a token to swap for a drink at the bar.
What is the difference between OPEN and START?
OPEN (開場) is when the doors open and START (開演) is when the first act plays, usually 30 minutes to an hour later. Standing tickets carry an entry number (整理番号), and staff let people in by number at OPEN.
Can I buy tickets at the door?
Often, yes, for small shows. A listing with a 当日 or DOOR price sells on the night unless it sells out first, usually for a few hundred yen more than the advance price. Big names at the halls and arenas sell out in advance.
How do I buy gig tickets in Tokyo as a visitor?
Jazz clubs like Blue Note Tokyo, Cotton Club and Billboard Live Tokyo sell seats on their own sites, and Billboard's is in English. Live houses sell through e+, Pia, Lawson Ticket, LivePocket or the promoter, which are mostly in Japanese. ZAIKO, used by some clubs, has an English site. Each listing here links to the venue page that names the seller.
Where are the best jazz clubs in Tokyo?
Blue Note Tokyo in Minami-Aoyama, Billboard Live Tokyo in Tokyo Midtown and Cotton Club in Marunouchi book international names. Shinjuku Pit Inn, Alfie in Roppongi, JZ Brat in Shibuya and Sometime in Kichijoji have Tokyo players most nights of the week.
