Shimokitazawa

Vintage shops, live music, and the best curry in Tokyo

Step out of the south exit and the city changes register. The lanes are narrow and winding, second-hand clothing racks spill onto the street, and the live houses look untouched since the eighties. Daniel's own Tokyo neighbourhood, Sasazuka, is a short train ride away. You don't need a plan here, but the places below are the ones you'll come back for.

Shimokita works best as an afternoon that turns into an evening. Arrive around three, when the vintage racks are out and the record shops are open, then let the lanes funnel you toward dinner. Residents spent years campaigning against a planned road through the station area, and when the Odakyu line moved underground, the redevelopment that followed (the low-rise Reload strip and the Bonus Track development along the old track bed) was unusually careful. It's mostly small units let to independent shops rather than chains.

The crowd is young and creative, designers and musicians and film students, and the neighbourhood calendar shows it. There's a famous curry festival every October, the live houses have something on nearly every night, and theatres like Honda Gekijo anchor a serious fringe drama scene. Weekday mornings are the quiet hours. Saturday afternoon is when it's packed.

Getting there

Odakyu Line from Shinjuku (7 minutes, express) or Keio Inokashira Line from Shibuya (4 minutes, express). Use the south side for the densest streets.

What to see

Shimokitazawa has no single monument. The sights are the streets themselves, and the way to see them is to start with Shimokitazawa vintage. There are more than twenty second-hand shops within a few minutes of the south exit, from Chicago to the smaller lanes where the stock turns over weekly. Give it a whole afternoon. Village Vanguard, part bookshop and part novelty store, is where you'll find the strange gifts nobody else brings home.

Then follow the old track bed. Shimokitazawa Reload, the low-rise strip of white boxes along the rail line, shows how the neighbourhood handled redevelopment. It's independent roasters, a sake bar and design shops instead of chains, and Ogawa Coffee Laboratory is the one to duck into on a wet day. At night the sight to see is Shimokitazawa live venues. Shelter and Garage have been running original bands for decades, and a door charge with a drink ticket buys you an evening of something you've never heard of.

Where to eat and drink

Start with curry, because Shimokitazawa curry row is the reason many Tokyoites come here at all. Dozens of independent shops within a few blocks serve Japanese, keema and Sri Lankan styles, and picking one by the smell from the doorway works fine. Curry Spice Gelateria Kalpasi, which pairs South Indian curry with spice gelato, is the unusual one. For coffee, Bear Pond Espresso is the cult stop. It has strict house rules and a signature Angel Stain espresso made in small numbers and served only until early afternoon, so go before noon. It's closed on Tuesdays. Sidewalk Coffee Roasters is the easier option between shops, with a window bar and house-roasted beans that make a light souvenir. Naochan Ramen is the backstreet counter for a cheap, rich bowl off-peak.

Evenings split three ways. Shirubee is the izakaya, a big counter wrapped around an open kitchen serving classics with twists like nikujaga with garlic bread. Arrive at the 5pm opening or book, and look for the lantern down the alley. Wine Laundry pairs charcoal yakitori with natural wine in a tiny room, so book ahead and let the staff choose the bottle. For beer, Coaster Craft Beer & Kitchen rotates Japanese taps and does proper food. Good Heavens Pub is the British pub, and on quiz nights and match days it's one of the easiest rooms in Tokyo for talking to strangers.

Where to stay

Shimokitazawa isn't a hotel neighbourhood, and that's part of the appeal. What there is runs to a handful of small hotels and hostels near the station, plus apartments and guesthouses in the residential streets that spread out in every direction. Stay within ten minutes' walk of the Odakyu and Keio Inokashira platforms and you can do the whole neighbourhood on foot, with Shinjuku seven minutes away by express and Shibuya four.

It suits you if you want to sleep somewhere that feels lived-in, if you're planning late nights at Shimokitazawa live venues without a train home, and if you'd happily trade a big-name hotel for a quiet street and a morning coffee at Sidewalk Coffee Roasters. Families and first-time visitors who want everything at the door will find Shinjuku easier.

How to do it in a day

Arrive before eleven and go straight to Bear Pond Espresso while the Angel Stain is still on, then pick up a second cup to walk with from Sidewalk Coffee Roasters. Spend the late morning on the calmer north side before the racks come out in force. Lunch is Shimokitazawa curry row. Pick the counter with a free seat rather than the one with the longest queue, or duck into Naochan Ramen off-peak. The afternoon belongs to Shimokitazawa vintage. Work the south side lanes and finish at Shimokitazawa Reload when the bags get heavy or the rain starts.

Check the listings for Shimokitazawa live venues over a first drink at Coaster Craft Beer & Kitchen around five. Dinner is Shirubee at opening, or Wine Laundry if you booked a table. Then pay the door charge, collect your drink ticket and see who's playing. Good Heavens Pub is the last stop if the night still has legs. The last trains to Shinjuku and Shibuya run past midnight.
