Insider tip

The beans, roasted in-house, make a light souvenir. Stand at the window bar and watch Shimokita go past.

Afternoon. Cross town for one small neighbourhood and give it everything left in the day. Shimokitazawa is the pick, a neighbourhood Daniel knows well and a short ride from his corner of Tokyo. Vintage shops by the dozen along the Shimokitazawa vintage streets, Sidewalk Coffee Roasters for the mid-afternoon reset, Shimokitazawa curry row for a late lunch chosen by smell. The Shimokitazawa neighbourhood guide explains why the area matters. The alternative is Nakameguro, where restaurants and one-off shops line a canal under cherry trees. It's at its best in blossom season and quietly good the rest of the year.

Afternoon and evening in Shimokitazawa. About ten minutes on the Odakyu line and you're in a completely different city. Shimokita runs on its own schedule. Record stores and vintage shops, curry counters and espresso bars, live music that starts at nine. Start with Sidewalk Coffee Roasters, work through the vintage shops, have curry for an early dinner, and be here at sunset when the bars get going. Daniel knows it well. It's a short ride from his corner of Tokyo in Sasazuka.

Bear Pond Espresso is the most famous espresso bar in the neighbourhood and one of the most particular in Tokyo. No laptops, no phone calls, cash only, and it closes when the beans run out, often by midday on weekends. Treat it as a ritual rather than a refuel. If you just want a good cup and a bench, Sidewalk Coffee Roasters is friendlier to wanderers.

Step out of the south exit and the city changes register. The lanes are narrow and winding, second-hand clothing racks spill onto the street, and the live houses look untouched since the eighties. Daniel's own Tokyo neighbourhood, Sasazuka, is a short train ride away. You don't need a plan here, but the places below are the ones you'll come back for.
