Insider tip

Famous at cherry blossom time, but better on an ordinary evening. Walk the river south from the station and pick whichever restaurant smells right.

Choice two is Nakameguro. The canal lined with cherry trees, Onibus Coffee beside the train tracks, Neapolitan pizza at Seirinkan, and the Nakameguro canal bars after dark. The Nakameguro neighbourhood guide explains the area.

Afternoon. Cross town for one small neighbourhood and give it everything left in the day. Shimokitazawa is the pick, a neighbourhood Daniel knows well and a short ride from his corner of Tokyo. Vintage shops by the dozen along the Shimokitazawa vintage streets, Sidewalk Coffee Roasters for the mid-afternoon reset, Shimokitazawa curry row for a late lunch chosen by smell. The Shimokitazawa neighbourhood guide explains why the area matters. The alternative is Nakameguro, where restaurants and one-off shops line a canal under cherry trees. It's at its best in blossom season and quietly good the rest of the year.

Afternoon in Shimokitazawa or Nakameguro. Cross town for one small neighbourhood and give it the whole afternoon. Shimokitazawa is the first choice, a neighbourhood Daniel knows well and a short ride from his corner of Tokyo. It's a tangle of vintage shops, record stores, curry counters and coffee roasters a few minutes from Shibuya on the Keio Inokashira line, and it runs on its own unhurried schedule. The alternative is Nakameguro, where restaurants and one-off shops line a canal under cherry trees, unbeatable in blossom season and quietly pleasant the rest of the year.

Canal-side cafes and the best evening sakura in Tokyo

Nakameguro is built around its canal, and it's the canal that sets the pace. Slow walks, good coffee, boutiques you browse rather than raid. During cherry blossom season the Meguro River becomes the single best evening hanami spot in the city, with the lit blossoms reflecting in the water. The backstreets behind the main strip still feel local.

Nakameguro has 7 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 2 restaurants, 2 cafes, 1 bar, 1 neighbourhood and 1 bathhouse. Read the Nakameguro guide.
