Nakameguro

Canal-side cafes and the best evening sakura in Tokyo

Nakameguro is built around its canal, and it's the canal that sets the pace. Slow walks, good coffee, boutiques you browse rather than raid. During cherry blossom season the Meguro River becomes the single best evening hanami spot in the city, with the lit blossoms reflecting in the water. The backstreets behind the main strip still feel local.

Nakameguro is organised around a single piece of geography, the Meguro River, a concrete-banked canal lined with cherry trees and, behind them, a strip of boutiques, cafes and izakayas. For about a week a year the canal becomes one of the most photographed places in Japan, some 800 trees along four kilometres, lit by lanterns at night. The other fifty-one weeks it's simply one of the most pleasant places in Tokyo to walk slowly.

The neighbourhood splits in two. There's the polished canal-front, and there's the warren of backstreets behind it, where the counters seat eight and the natural wine flows. Come late afternoon, walk the water in both directions, then let the evening happen in the backstreets. Daikanyama is a fifteen-minute uphill walk if you'd like to chain the two.

Getting there

Tokyu Toyoko Line or Hibiya Line to Naka-Meguro, one express stop from Shibuya. It's two minutes from the station to the canal.

What to see

The Meguro River is the sight, and you'll want to see it on foot, along both banks. From Naka-Meguro station, cross to the canal and walk south first. This stretch has the densest run of cherry trees, low stone bridges every hundred metres or so, and the riverside terraces that make up Nakameguro riverside dining. Then turn back and go north under the tracks, where the canal narrows, the shops thin out, and within five minutes the neighbourhood turns residential.

The one building worth a detour is Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo, Kengo Kuma's four-storey roastery right on the water. Treat it as architecture first. The copper cask climbing through the atrium and the terraces stacked over the river are the draw, and the cedar-slat exterior reads as a deliberate answer to the canal's cherry trees. Onibus Coffee Nakameguro is the opposite scale, a converted house beside the Tokyu tracks whose upstairs window frames the passing trains. Between them you've got the whole neighbourhood, a few polished set pieces and a lot of quiet lanes connecting them. Outside sakura week, the best light on the water is the hour before sunset.

Where to eat and drink

Nakameguro eats late and books ahead. The canal-front terraces of Nakameguro riverside dining are where the evening starts on warm nights, and the grilled-meat places with tables facing the water are the ones to aim for. In late March those tables are gone weeks in advance, so on a normal week arrive at opening and take what's free. A block back from the water, Seirinkan is the most singular meal in the neighbourhood, a pizzeria with exactly two pizzas, margherita and marinara, fired in a wood oven. Don't ask for toppings. Reserve or arrive at opening.

Coffee is the daytime currency here. Onibus Coffee Nakameguro roasts on site and pours single-origin filter that's a benchmark for the city. Take the cup to the wooden deck. Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo is busier and pricier, but the terrace seats over the river on a weekday morning justify the detour, and the third-floor Arriviamo bar mixes coffee cocktails. When the restaurants empty, Nakameguro canal bars take over, standing wine bars and small cocktail counters with their windows open to the water, busiest on Fridays. Follow the warm light rather than the English menus.

Where to stay

Nakameguro doesn't have many hotels of its own, which is part of why it stays calm. What exists is mostly small apartment-style rentals and a scattering of boutique properties in the streets between the canal and the Tokyu tracks, with more choice up the hill toward Daikanyama and along the Toyoko Line toward Shibuya, one express stop away. That geography works in your favour. Sleep in Shibuya or Ebisu for the hotel choice and you're on the canal in ten minutes, or take a rental in the backstreets south of the station if a week of coffee, wine bars and slow walking is the point of the trip. It suits couples and repeat visitors more than first-timers who want a big-station base.

How to do it in a day

Start at Onibus Coffee Nakameguro when it opens, pour-over in hand on the deck, then walk the canal north under the tracks while the neighbourhood is still waking up. Loop back to Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo before ten, when the weekday queue is short, and take a terrace seat over the water for a second coffee and a proper look at the building. Spend the late morning in the boutiques behind the south bank, then walk the fifteen minutes uphill to Daikanyama for lunch and the bookshop campus, and come back down through Saigoyama Park as the light softens. Aim to be on the canal an hour before sunset for the best reflections. Dinner is Seirinkan at opening if you're in the mood for pizza, or a canal-side table among the Nakameguro riverside dining terraces if the evening's warm. Finish in the Nakameguro canal bars, moving counter to counter until the last Hibiya Line train.
