Weekly data

Tokyo hotel prices by neighbourhood

A weekly index of what a hotel night actually costs in each of Tokyo's neighbourhoods, sampled automatically from live booking searches. Medians, not averages, so one five-star outlier cannot skew an area. Free to cite.

Thin samples: fewer than 25 properties even at 3.5 km. Shown for reference, not ranked.

Chofu Thin sample about US$146 US$76 US$122 to US$179 7 within 3.5 km n/a

Typical range is the 25th to 75th percentile. Sample is the number of distinct properties priced and the search radius around the area's centre. Areas need at least 25 properties to be ranked; thin samples show an indicative median, and under 5 properties no median or range is shown. A + after the count means the supplier page limit was still reached in part of the area, so a few properties may be missing. Change compares this median with the snapshot nearest to four weeks earlier, only when both were measured the same way and both meet the floor.

Method

  • When: sampled once a week, on Tuesdays. Latest snapshot 20 October 2026.
  • Dates searched: a 2-night stay checking in 30 days after the sampling date (currently 19 November 2026 to 21 November 2026), for two adults.
  • Where: a circle centred on the hand-picked places in each of the 26 neighbourhood guides, so the sample reflects where visitors actually spend their time rather than an administrative ward. The circle starts at a 0.6 km radius and widens to 1.2, 1.8, 2.5 and 3.5 km until it holds at least 25 distinct properties, so busy areas stay tight and quiet ones reach far enough for a usable sample. The radius behind every row is printed in the Sample column.
  • Source: live accommodation searches through Stay22, which aggregates suppliers such as Booking.com, Expedia and Hotels.com. For each property the cheapest nightly rate across suppliers is kept, as quoted at search time. Every property inside the circle is counted, not just the cheapest: searches that fill a supplier results page are split into smaller boxes until each comes back complete.
  • Statistics: minimum, 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile per area, rounded to whole dollars. Medians rather than averages, so a single luxury property cannot move an area's figure.
  • Sample sizes: an area's median counts as reliable at 25 or more distinct properties. Areas still under that floor at 3.5 km are marked as thin samples, show their median as indicative only, and are left out of the cheapest and priciest summaries. Under 5 properties no median or range is shown at all, only the cheapest rate found.
  • History and method change: each area keeps its last 26 weekly snapshots. Snapshots before 22 September 2026 used an earlier method, a fixed box about 1.2 km across that returned at most the 40 cheapest listings, which understated medians in busy areas and left quiet ones with a handful of listings. The 4-week change only compares two snapshots measured with the same method where both meet the floor, and shows n/a otherwise.

Questions about the index

Which Tokyo neighbourhood has the cheapest hotels this week?

In the snapshot taken on 20 October 2026 for a two-night stay from 19 November 2026, Yanaka had the lowest median nightly rate at US$168 across 42 listings. It was followed by Hatagaya (US$185) and Koenji (US$196). Areas with fewer than 25 properties in the sample are left out of this ranking.

Which Tokyo neighbourhood has the most expensive hotels this week?

Roppongi had the highest median nightly rate on 20 October 2026, at US$345 across 66 listings. Ginza (US$339) and Harajuku (US$319) were next. That is 2.1 times the cheapest area's median. Areas with fewer than 25 properties in the sample are left out of this ranking.

How is the Tokyo hotel price index calculated?

Every week the index searches Stay22 for a two-night stay starting 30 days later, in a circle around the centre of the hand-picked places in each of the 26 neighbourhood guides. The circle starts at a 0.6 km radius and widens to 1.2, 1.8, 2.5 and 3.5 km until it holds at least 25 distinct properties, and every property in the circle is counted, not just the cheapest. For each property the cheapest nightly rate across suppliers is kept, and the area is summarised by its minimum, 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile, with the sample size and radius published beside every figure. Areas still under 25 properties at 3.5 km are marked as thin samples and left out of the rankings. Snapshots before 22 September 2026 used an older method (a fixed box about 1.2 km across and at most the 40 cheapest listings) and are not compared with newer ones.

How often is the index updated, and can the numbers be cited?

The index refreshes every Tuesday and each neighbourhood keeps its last 26 weekly snapshots. It currently holds 6 weekly snapshots, from 19 September 2026 to 20 October 2026. The data is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, so journalists, forum posters and researchers can quote it freely with the line "Source: Roam Tokyo Hotel Price Index, roamtokyo.com/tokyo-hotel-prices/". When quoting an area, quote its sample size too; areas marked as thin samples are indicative only.
