Ichigaya is a calm stretch along the old Edo castle moat where people fish in the middle of the city. The fishing pond is the Ichigaya Fish Center, right outside Ichigaya Station (JR, Tokyo Metro and Toei lines). The cherry-lined walk along the water up to Kagurazaka is one of the nicest strolls in central Tokyo.

Insider tip

Come in cherry blossom season for the path along the moat, then walk up into Kagurazaka for dinner. The fish center is open 11am to 7pm on weekdays and 9am to 7pm at weekends and on holidays.

The main approach starts at Kudanshita Station (Tozai, Hanzomon and Toei Shinjuku lines). Walk up the hill from the station and in through the giant torii. Don't slip in from a side gate, because the approach is built to be seen from the bottom. Ichigaya and Iidabashi stations are also within about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. After the lanterns go out at 9:30 PM, Kudanshita gets busy. Jimbocho, about 15 minutes' walk east, is a calmer station to head home from.
