Jindaiji is Tokyo's second oldest temple, founded in 733 AD, in a leafy pocket of Chofu that feels like a country village. The approach is lined with water wheels, old thatched shops and soba restaurants fed by natural spring water.

Insider tip

The temple is famous for jindaiji soba. Eat at one of the soba houses around the gate, then walk up the hill to the botanical gardens. It's about 15 minutes by bus from Chofu Station or about 30 from Kichijoji.

Yumori no Sato is a few minutes' walk from Jindaiji Temple, with black spring water from 1,500 metres down and soba in its restaurant. Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu sits right by Takaosanguchi station, so you can soak after hiking Mt Takao and take the train straight back.

Jindaiji's temple, soba, and a personal landmark

Chofu sits at the western edge of the city, and most visitors never make it out here. Their loss. Jindaiji is Tokyo's second-oldest temple, surrounded by water wheels, soba restaurants and a full botanical garden. It's also where Daniel proposed to his wife, so this site will always argue it's the most romantic spot in Tokyo.

Chofu has 4 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 1 shrine or temple, 1 park or garden, 1 special spot and 1 bathhouse. Read the Chofu guide.
