Koishikawa Korakuen is one of the oldest and finest Japanese gardens in Tokyo, laid out by the Mito Tokugawa clan in 1629. Everything a classical garden is supposed to have is here: hills, streams, a lake, a moon bridge, even rice paddies.

Insider tip
Entry is 300 yen. Plum and cherry blossoms are excellent here in spring. People overlook it for the more famous parks, so it stays calm.
What the guides say about Koishikawa Korakuen
Koishikawa Korakuen, next to Tokyo Dome, is one of the oldest Edo-period gardens in the city and turns in late November. It's compact, never overwhelmingly crowded, and the red maples and stone bridges are easy to photograph without fighting for angles. Its evening light-up runs 13 to 24 November in 2026, a little ahead of the peak, with projection mapping on the garden wall and the Engetsukyo bridge. It sits three stops from Komagome on the Namboku Line, so it's the other half of the Rikugien pairing if you'd rather do two gardens than a walk.
Quiet. Yanaka Cemetery has a cherry-lined central avenue that locals walk in near silence. Koishikawa Korakuen is a stroll garden with weeping cherries over the pond rather than a picnic lawn, so there's nobody claiming ground. Inokashira Park in Kichijoji is busy on weekends but calm on a weekday morning, with boats out under the trees.
