Ladrio is a 1949 kissaten in a narrow lane off Yasukuni-dori, dim, brick-walled and wood-panelled, and widely credited with bringing Vienna coffee, strong coffee under a cap of whipped cream, to Japan. The spaghetti napolitan is the other reason regulars come.

Insider tip

Order the Vienna coffee and take a table at the back. It stays open into the evening on weekdays, which makes it a good last stop after the bookshops close.

Tokyo's book town, fuelled by curry and old coffee houses

Jimbocho is the largest second-hand book district in the world, with around 130 bookshops on a few blocks, from rare woodblock prints to 100-yen paperback carts. Between the shelves you'll find some of Tokyo's oldest coffee houses and the densest cluster of curry restaurants in the city, and that's what the book trade has run on for a century.

Jimbocho has 7 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 3 cafes, 2 shops and 2 restaurants. Read the Jimbocho guide.
