Sabouru is a decades-old coffee shop in the book district that looks like a mountain hut, vines outside and carved wood inside. Blue walls, red lamps and a menu that hasn't changed make it one of the most atmospheric old cafes in Tokyo.

Insider tip

It opens at 9:30am and closes on Sundays. Pair a coffee with a morning of book hunting in the Jimbocho shops across the street.

Jimbocho, 15 minutes east, is Tokyo's book town and its curry capital. Curry Bondy and Sumatra Curry Kyoeido are two of the classics, and Sabouru, a 1955 coffee shop of carved wood and red lamps, is where you go for an iced coffee. The Jimbocho neighbourhood guide has more.

Tokyo's book town, fuelled by curry and old coffee houses

Jimbocho is the largest second-hand book district in the world, with around 130 bookshops on a few blocks, from rare woodblock prints to 100-yen paperback carts. Between the shelves you'll find some of Tokyo's oldest coffee houses and the densest cluster of curry restaurants in the city, and that's what the book trade has run on for a century.

Jimbocho has 7 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 3 cafes, 2 shops and 2 restaurants. Read the Jimbocho guide.
