The Suginami Animation Museum is a free museum on the third floor of Suginami Kaikan, run by Tokyo Polytechnic University. A timeline walks you through the history of Japanese anime, there's a dubbing corner where you can try voicing a scene yourself, and the theatre shows anime on a 200-inch screen. Special exhibitions on one studio or series change three or four times a year.
Insider tip
Take a Kanto Bus from the north exit of Ogikubo station to Ogikubo Keisatsusho-mae (about 5 minutes), then walk 2 minutes. The walk takes about 20 minutes. Everything's free, the theatre and the anime library included. It's closed on Mondays, or the next weekday when Monday is a holiday, and the staff speak Japanese only.

Suginami's free anime weekend fills Suginami Kaikan, the building that houses the Suginami Animation Museum, with screenings and talk shows on work by the ward's anime studios, animation-making booths, caricature drawing and an anime song ensemble on stage.
