Harmonica Yokocho
Kichijoji, Tokyo
Harmonica Yokocho is a warren of tiny bars and food stalls in the old black market alleys by Kichijoji Station, named because the cramped stalls look like harmonica reeds. Fish shops by day, izakayas and natural wine bars at night.
Insider tip
Go around 6pm, when the day and night worlds overlap. The standing sushi bar near the north entrance is good value.
What the guides say about Harmonica Yokocho
18. Kichijoji and Inokashira Park. Swan boats, buskers and the alley bars of Harmonica Yokocho. Inokashira is one of the few city parks in Tokyo that's a real pleasure to be in, with a pond, a small shrine on an island, and cherry blossoms so thick they turn the water pink. Pair it with the Ghibli Museum nearby in Mitaka.
Start in Inokashira Park, the lake at the heart of the neighbourhood, with rowboats for rent and a small zoo. Walk the wooded path through the park's southern end to the museum in Mitaka, about fifteen minutes, and give Miyazaki's building the two or three hours it deserves. There's a short film shown nowhere else, the Catbus room for young children and the rooftop robot. Back in Kichijoji, the streets radiating from the station are full of independent shops, and Harmonica Yokocho by the north exit is the evening, a warren of former black-market alleys where the fish stalls close and the standing bars open around 6pm. The Kichijoji neighbourhood guide covers the area in more depth.

Inokashira Park has swan boats and buskers, Harmonica Yokocho packs dozens of micro-bars into a former black market, and the whole place runs at a friendlier speed than the city centre.
Kichijoji has 3 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 1 park or garden, 1 restaurant and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Kichijoji guide.
