Happo-en is a free Japanese strolling garden attached to a famous wedding venue, with roots going back 400 years. It's at 1-1-1 Shirokanedai in Minato, a minute's walk from Shirokanedai Station on the Namboku and Mita lines. The pond garden has a row of bonsai up to about 525 years old, a teahouse, koi and cherry and maple colour in season.

Insider tip
At weekends there's a parade of wedding couples in kimono being photographed, which is half the charm. The Muan teahouse serves matcha overlooking the pond. Autumn is the best time of year here.
What the guides say about Happo-en
Shinjuku Gyoen is a national garden and runs on its own calendar. It's closed on Mondays (the next weekday when Monday is a holiday), so you won't want it for a Monday. Happo-en and Kyu-Yasuda Garden keep their own hours, so check their place pages. For free green space with no gate, Yoyogi Park is open all day.
