Yoyogi Park is where Tokyo goes to play. At weekends the lawns fill with musicians, unicyclists, dog walkers and picnickers, and the Meiji Shrine forest next door makes it the big green space of the west side.

Free, and open 24 hours. Big festivals run here all year. On Sundays the rockabilly dancers by the entrance are a Tokyo institution.
What the guides say about Yoyogi Park
For about three weeks in December, some 500,000 blue lights turn the roughly 900 m stretch from Shibuya's Koen-dori to the zelkova avenue by Yoyogi Park into a glowing blue tunnel. Last season it ran 4 to 25 December 2025, 5 PM to 10 PM. Free. It's packed on weekend nights, so go on a weeknight or get there right at 5 PM. The Shibuya neighbourhood guide covers the rest of the district.
Shibuya's Ao no Dokutsu, the "Blue Cave," turns the tree-lined avenue between Shibuya and Yoyogi Park into a tunnel of deep blue light, with a reflective ground surface that doubles the effect. It's the most immersive of the big displays and, on weekend evenings, the most crowded. It only runs in December (4 to 25 December in 2025), so go on a weeknight before Christmas.
Yoyogi Park's wooded interior turns quietly through November, with none of the management or ticketing of the formal gardens. It's the best option if you want autumn colour somewhere you can spread a sheet on the ground, eat something from the nearby conbini and watch the leaves fall without a schedule.

The jump cut is the whole point of Harajuku. Takeshita Street is loud and rammed with teenagers, and one block away Meiji Shrine sits inside a forest so quiet you'll hear the gravel under your feet. Do the shrine early in the morning, then watch the street wake up.
