Harajuku Gyoza Lou is a no-frills gyoza joint near Cat Street that has fed Harajuku for more than two decades with fried or steamed gyoza at 395 yen for six, plus a shiso version. The open kitchen and rock-bottom prices keep the queue going.
Insider tip
Order both fried and steamed, with garlic and chives, plus a beer. Go off-peak to dodge the line.
What the guides say about Harajuku Gyoza Lou
Leave the shrine and you're in Harajuku straight away. Takeshita Street is 400 metres of crepe stands, pastel shopfronts and teenagers dressed with more commitment than most adults manage, and it takes one pass, no more. Cut through Cat Street, the back lane of small labels and coffee windows that runs between Harajuku and Shibuya, and detour to Omotesando for the flagship architecture, one glass facade after another by the country's best-known architects. Lunch is Harajuku Gyoza Lou, pan-fried dumplings, a beer and a bill that barely reaches four figures.
Morning. Meiji Shrine opens at sunrise, and the forest walk in from the Harajuku gate is the reason you're getting up early. The trees were planted a century ago and now feel older than the city around them. Leave through the same gate and Harajuku begins across the bridge. Do Takeshita Street in a single loud pass, then Cat Street and Omotesando's avenue of glass flagships for the calmer version of the same neighbourhood. Harajuku Gyoza Lou does a plate of six dumplings for a few hundred yen.
