Shinjuku Gyoen is the best park in Tokyo: 58 hectares with a French formal garden, an English landscape garden and a Japanese strolling garden. It has about 900 cherry trees, which makes it the best hanami spot in the city.

Insider tip
Entry is 500 yen and alcohol is banned, so hanami here is calmer than in the free parks. It opens at 9am and closes on Mondays, except in cherry blossom and chrysanthemum seasons.
What the guides say about Shinjuku Gyoen
Shinjuku Gyoen is the best all-round autumn garden in Tokyo. Maples ring the ponds of the Japanese garden, the plane-tree avenues of the French formal garden turn gold, and the broad lawns give the colour room to breathe. The garden is enclosed and entry is ticketed (¥500, closed Mondays), so it doesn't get as packed as Ueno Park. Go on a weekday morning if you can, then spend the evening at the free Metropolitan Government observation deck a short walk west. The Shinjuku neighbourhood guide covers the rest of the ward.
Big, but managed. Shinjuku Gyoen is ticketed (¥500), enclosed and alcohol-free, so the party crowds don't get in, and its mix of early and late varieties stretches the season from March into mid-April. Sumida Park in Asakusa runs along both banks of the river with the Skytree behind the trees, so the crowd spreads out along the length of it. Kitanomaru Park, next door to Chidorigafuchi, has the same trees and a fraction of the people.
Shinjuku Gyoen is a national garden and runs on its own calendar. It's closed on Mondays (the next weekday when Monday is a holiday), so you won't want it for a Monday. Happo-en and Kyu-Yasuda Garden keep their own hours, so check their place pages. For free green space with no gate, Yoyogi Park is open all day.

Around Shinjuku
Neon chaos, tiny bars, and a surprisingly serene garden
Shinjuku is the Tokyo people picture before they arrive, and it's every bit that intense. The trick is knowing when to switch modes. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for tiny-bar nights, and Shinjuku Gyoen is for when you need the volume turned down. The entry fee at Gyoen keeps the crowds manageable even in cherry blossom season, which makes it one of the best value tickets in the city.
Shinjuku has 16 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 parks and gardens, 2 bathhouses, 1 shrine or temple, 1 viewpoint, 1 landmark and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shinjuku guide.
