Kabukicho
Shinjuku, Tokyo
Kabukicho is Japan's most infamous entertainment district, a neon maze of izakayas, karaoke towers, host clubs and cinemas. Loud and gaudy, and safe enough to wander through wide-eyed.

Insider tip
Ignore the touts and never follow one into a bar. Stick to ground floor places you can see into. The Godzilla head and Golden Gai are on its edges.
What the guides say about Kabukicho
Evening. It's three stops on the Yamanote line to Shinjuku. Eat at Omoide Yokocho, the smoke-filled lane of yakitori counters by the west exit, then walk fifteen minutes through Kabukicho's neon to Golden Gai, where more than 200 bars fit into six alleys and few of them seat more than a dozen. Look for a posted cover charge, take whatever stool is free, and let the night run. The Shinjuku neighbourhood guide has more on the ward, from the Metropolitan Government Building's free observation deck down to the last bar.
Hanazono Shrine, behind Shinjuku's Kabukicho, holds one of the other big Tori-no-ichi fairs in Tokyo, on the same rooster days, with an eve festival the night before each one. Its grounds fill with kumade and food stalls against a backdrop of neon, and it's the easier choice if you're staying on the west side of the city. The shrine is a few minutes' walk from Shinjuku-sanchome Station. Smaller fairs run at other Otori shrines across the city.
The east side is where Kabukicho and Golden Gai are, north-east of the East Exit. Kabukicho is the loudest few blocks in Tokyo and where the cheapest hotels are. It's safe, and it's a fine place to spend an evening, but it's a poor place to try to sleep on your first jet-lagged night. Book west, walk east.

Neon chaos, tiny bars, and a surprisingly serene garden
Shinjuku is the Tokyo people picture before they arrive, and it's every bit that intense. The trick is knowing when to switch modes. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for tiny-bar nights, and Shinjuku Gyoen is for when you need the volume turned down. The entry fee at Gyoen keeps the crowds manageable even in cherry blossom season, which makes it one of the best value tickets in the city.
Shinjuku has 16 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 parks and gardens, 2 bathhouses, 1 shrine or temple, 1 viewpoint, 1 landmark and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shinjuku guide.
