Golden Gai
Shinjuku, Tokyo
Golden Gai is a few narrow alleys packed with tiny bars. Every bar has a theme, jazz, cinema, punk, sumo, horror, and the regulars are industry people, artists and visitors who found their way in.

Insider tip
Walk the alleys first and pick a bar that fits. Most charge a cover, usually posted at the door. Some welcome visitors, some prefer regulars. Ask before you sit down.
What the guides say about Golden Gai
The east side is where Kabukicho and Golden Gai are, north-east of the East Exit. Kabukicho is the loudest few blocks in Tokyo and where the cheapest hotels are. It's safe, and it's a fine place to spend an evening, but it's a poor place to try to sleep on your first jet-lagged night. Book west, walk east.
Evening in Shinjuku. About seven minutes on the JR Yamanote line. Start in Omoide Yokocho, the lantern-lit alley of tiny yakitori counters pressed against the tracks by Shinjuku station's west exit, where a dozen skewers and a beer at a six-seat counter is one of Tokyo's essential meals. Then walk fifteen minutes east through the neon to Golden Gai, six alleys holding more than 200 bars, most seating fewer than ten people. Look for the bars without a cover charge sign, or with one clearly posted, duck in wherever there's a seat, and talk to whoever's next to you. It's the best single evening in Tokyo, and it needs no plan beyond turning up.

Around Shinjuku
Neon chaos, tiny bars, and a surprisingly serene garden
Shinjuku is the Tokyo people picture before they arrive, and it's every bit that intense. The trick is knowing when to switch modes. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for tiny-bar nights, and Shinjuku Gyoen is for when you need the volume turned down. The entry fee at Gyoen keeps the crowds manageable even in cherry blossom season, which makes it one of the best value tickets in the city.
Shinjuku has 16 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 parks and gardens, 2 bathhouses, 1 shrine or temple, 1 viewpoint, 1 landmark and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shinjuku guide.
