Fuunji is the tsukemen that ruins every other tsukemen for you. It's a tiny counter south of Shinjuku station where thick noodles get dipped into a very rich chicken and fish broth. The queue moves fast, because everyone inside is eating, not talking.

Nearest station Shinjuku (south exit)
Cost ¥
Time needed 30-45 min
Best time Off-peak, 2 to 5pm

Insider tip

Buy your ticket from the machine before you join the queue. Get the tokusei tsukemen. The extra toppings earn their price.

13. A serious tsukemen. Fuunji near Shinjuku is the bowl other tsukemen get measured against. Thick, chewy noodles go into a concentrated, porky-fishy broth, and at the end you splash in the thinning soup. Every city has a "best ramen" tip. This one is specifically tsukemen, which is harder to find done this well.

Neon chaos, tiny bars, and a surprisingly serene garden

Shinjuku is the Tokyo people picture before they arrive, and it's every bit that intense. The trick is knowing when to switch modes. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for tiny-bar nights, and Shinjuku Gyoen is for when you need the volume turned down. The entry fee at Gyoen keeps the crowds manageable even in cherry blossom season, which makes it one of the best value tickets in the city.

Shinjuku has 16 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 parks and gardens, 2 bathhouses, 1 shrine or temple, 1 viewpoint, 1 landmark and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shinjuku guide.
