Isetan Shinjuku's food hall is on B1, the basement floor of the main building at 3-14-1 Shinjuku, and it's one of the great food experiences in Tokyo. It's an underground world of prepared foods, French pastries, wagashi, sake and immaculately presented bento.

Insider tip

From Shinjuku-sanchome Station, take the Isetan gate (Isetan Shomen Kaisatsu) and you're at the store in about 30 seconds. It opens at 10am. Go hungry and graze. The obanzai side dishes are exceptional. Everything shuts at 8pm sharp.

East of the station is Shinjuku as most people picture it: Isetan and the department stores along Shinjuku-dori, then Kabukicho north-east of the East Exit, the entertainment district that stays awake later than anywhere in Tokyo, with Golden Gai tucked behind it. It's safe, it's loud, and the touts at 1am are part of the deal.

Department store basement food halls, the depachika, go into full seasonal mode in autumn. Isetan in Shinjuku and Mitsukoshi in Ginza stock limited-edition wagashi, chestnut sweets in particular, from October through November. Buy one thing from a depachika and eat it on a park bench. It costs almost nothing and you'll remember it.

11. A depachika basement food hall. The one under Isetan in Shinjuku is the best food museum in the city, and everything in it is for sale. Spend an hour looking before you buy anything. On a weekend afternoon the sight of it alone would justify a ticket, and there isn't one.

Tonight's gigs across Tokyo

Neon chaos, tiny bars, and a surprisingly serene garden

Shinjuku is the Tokyo people picture before they arrive, and it's every bit that intense. The trick is knowing when to switch modes. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for tiny-bar nights, and Shinjuku Gyoen is for when you need the volume turned down. The entry fee at Gyoen keeps the crowds manageable even in cherry blossom season, which makes it one of the best value tickets in the city.

Shinjuku has 16 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 parks and gardens, 2 bathhouses, 1 shrine or temple, 1 viewpoint, 1 landmark and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shinjuku guide.
