Kabukiza Theatre
Ginza, Tokyo
Source: kabukiweb.net, checked 9 Oct 2026.
Kabukiza has been the main home of kabuki since 1889. Kengo Kuma rebuilt it in 2013, restoring the grand Momoyama-style facade beneath a modern tower. Performances run most of the year, and cheap single-act tickets let you try the spectacle without sitting through a four-hour programme.

Insider tip
Buy a hitomakumi single-act ticket for the 4th floor, about 1,500 to 4,000 yen in October 2026, and hire the English captioning guide. The basement shops, which sell bento for the show, are good for a browse even without a ticket.
What the guides say about Kabukiza Theatre
Ginza is a grid of department stores, flagship boutiques, galleries and some of the most expensive restaurant counters in Japan. Yurakucho and the JR tracks bound it to the west, Higashi-Ginza and the Kabukiza Theatre to the east, Shimbashi to the south. On weekend afternoons Chuo-dori closes to traffic and turns into a promenade. Step one block off it and you're among office lobbies and small bars, and once the shops shut it's one of the quietest central places to sleep in Tokyo.

The trick is to look past the brand facades to the old coffee houses, the stationery tower and the bars upstairs.
