Tsukiji Outer Market outlived the fish auction. Dozens of vendors sell sushi, tamagoyaki, wagyu skewers and scallops grilled to order, and breakfast here is one of the great Tokyo rituals.

Insider tip

Go between 7 and 10am, and bring cash. The tamagoyaki from Marutake is the classic. Most shops wind down by early afternoon, and many close on Sundays, public holidays and some Wednesdays.

Morning at Tsukiji Outer Market. The wholesale fish auction moved to Toyosu years ago, but the Tsukiji Outer Market stayed behind and it's still Tokyo's best breakfast. Get there by 8am, before the crowds thicken, and avoid Sundays and public holidays, when many shops close (some also close on Wednesdays). Then graze. Tamagoyaki (sweet rolled omelette) on a stick, a fresh uni bowl, grilled scallops in the shell, strong coffee from a counter that's served the market for decades. Eat standing, follow your nose, and stop when you're full rather than when you've finished a list.

Morning. Tsukiji Outer Market by 8am, before the aisles fill. Breakfast is whatever's on the grill as you pass. Scallops, tamagoyaki, tuna cheek. Sushizanmai Honten, the flagship of the chain whose founder paid record prices for the New Year tuna at auction, is right there if you'd rather sit down to a full sushi breakfast.
