Kanamachiyu is a temple-style sento from 1943, one stop from Shibamata on the Keisei Kanamachi Line, renovated in 2021 under a 'new retro' idea. The old bandai counter is kept as a display piece, and there's a small garden, a coffered ceiling, a pendulum clock and a Mt Fuji painting.

Insider tip

Wash at the taps before you get in, and keep your small towel out of the water. Shampoo and body soap are free. One bathroom has a sauna and an outdoor resting area, and the two sides swap every Friday. Open 4pm to 10pm, closed Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, so plan it for the weekend.

Shibamata sits at Tokyo's eastern edge on the Edo River, and it keeps the low-rise shitamachi streetscape the rest of the city lost.
