The Hachiko Statue outside Shibuya Station honours the Akita who kept coming back to meet his dead owner's train for nearly ten years in the 1920s and 30s. The first statue went up in 1934 with Hachiko himself present. It was melted down for metal in 1944, and today's statue replaced it in 1948. It's now the default meeting spot in Tokyo.

Insider tip

There's almost always a queue for photos, so go at dawn if you want the statue to yourself. His preserved body is on show at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno.

Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu, which is directly connected to the station inside Shibuya Mark City and has a lounge overlooking the scramble. Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya on Dogenzaka is the nearest of the newer hotels. The crossing and the Hachiko statue are both on the map with the best times to see them empty.

The crossing is just the cover page

Everyone does the Scramble, and you should too, once. But Shibuya's real personality lives in the smaller streets. It's in Nonbei Yokocho's two-storey bars pressed against the train tracks, the climb up to the rooftop views, and the walk down towards Daikanyama as the noise fades behind you.

Shibuya has 14 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 shops, 2 viewpoints, 2 bars, 2 cafes, 2 restaurants, 1 landmark and 1 bathhouse. Read the Shibuya guide.
