Up to 3,000 people cross Shibuya Crossing at once, at one of the busiest intersections in the world. Yes, it's touristy. Standing in the middle of the scramble as the lights change is still one of those Tokyo moments.

Insider tip

Skip the crowded Starbucks window. The rooftop deck on MAGNET by SHIBUYA109 looks straight down on the crossing (paid, drink included), and the free view from the Shibuya Station walkways towards the Mark City passage is a good fallback.

Morning. The Shibuya Crossing shot is worth doing once, and once only. Go before 9am if you can, before the organised tour groups arrive, cross it, take the photo, and get it out of your system. Then walk five minutes into Nonbei Yokocho, two storeys of matchbox bars pressed against the train tracks. That contrast, tourist spectacle to neighbourhood bar in ten minutes on foot, is the whole city in miniature. From there, Miyashita Park for the rooftop lawn, then up through the backstreets towards Harajuku.

Afternoon in Shibuya. Walk south, downhill, about fifteen minutes into Shibuya. Do Shibuya Crossing twice. Cross it once at street level in the scramble, then find a second-floor window nearby and watch a few cycles from above. It's worth seeing, and it takes twenty minutes, not an afternoon. Spend what's left of the daylight in the backstreets, the record shops of Udagawacho and the food floors of the department stores.

Afternoon. Walk down into Shibuya. Cross Shibuya Crossing once, watch it once from above, and then you're done with it. Give what's left of the daylight to what surrounds it: the lawn on top of Miyashita Park, the record floors at Tower Records Shibuya, and the coffee at Chatei Hatou, a dark-wood kissaten where each cup is made slowly and served in antique porcelain.

The crossing is just the cover page

Everyone does the Scramble, and you should too, once. But Shibuya's real personality lives in the smaller streets. It's in Nonbei Yokocho's two-storey bars pressed against the train tracks, the climb up to the rooftop views, and the walk down towards Daikanyama as the noise fades behind you.

Shibuya has 14 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 shops, 2 viewpoints, 2 bars, 2 cafes, 2 restaurants, 1 landmark and 1 bathhouse. Read the Shibuya guide.
