Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken
Ikebukuro, Tokyo
Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken is the birthplace of tsukemen as a Tokyo staple. Kazuo Yamagishi, the God of Ramen, created morisoba, the dipping-noodle dish that became tsukemen, in the 1950s and made it famous at this shop, which he opened in 1961. After redevelopment the shop reopened a short walk from the original site.

What the guides say about Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken
Ikebukuro isn't a sightseeing district, but it's a good place to spend evenings. Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken is the shop credited with inventing tsukemen dipping noodles, and it's a ten-minute walk from Sunshine City. Sunshine 60 has the observation floors, and the aquarium is in the same complex, so the east side is your plan for a rainy day. A fifteen-minute walk south brings you to Zoshigaya Kishimojin, a temple with a 1600s-era hall, Kamikawaguchiya, a sweet shop founded in 1781 that claims to be the oldest in Japan, and a monthly handmade market. You can also get there on the Toden Arakawa tram, the last of Tokyo's municipal streetcar lines.
