Zoshigaya Kishimojin is a 16th-century temple in a calm pocket ten minutes from the chaos of Ikebukuro, reached along a lane of ancient zelkova trees. There's a tiny old sweets shop in the grounds.

Ikebukuro isn't a sightseeing district, but it's a good place to spend evenings. Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken is the shop credited with inventing tsukemen dipping noodles, and it's a ten-minute walk from Sunshine City. Sunshine 60 has the observation floors, and the aquarium is in the same complex, so the east side is your plan for a rainy day. A fifteen-minute walk south brings you to Zoshigaya Kishimojin, a temple with a 1600s-era hall, Kamikawaguchiya, a sweet shop founded in 1781 that claims to be the oldest in Japan, and a monthly handmade market. You can also get there on the Toden Arakawa tram, the last of Tokyo's municipal streetcar lines.

Three nights of lantern processions to Kishimojin-do, a 1664 temple hall in the Zoshigaya backstreets, with mando towers of white paper flowers and relentless uchiwa-daiko drumming. Processions set off in the evening from around Ikebukuro and Zoshigaya.

Craft market held on the third Sunday of most months in the cedar-shaded grounds of Kishimojin Temple, where up to 200 makers may only sell things they made themselves. One of the best places in Tokyo to buy ceramics, leather goods, and prints directly from the artists.

Ikebukuro is the north side's answer to Shinjuku. There's a giant station wrapped in department stores, Sunshine City and the anime shops of Otome Road to the east, and a long list of business hotels. Walk ten minutes in any direction, though, and you'll find a Frank Lloyd Wright school, a red-brick campus, an old temple on a tram line and the birthplace of tsukemen.
