Insider tip
Use the east exit for Sunshine City and Otome Road, the west exit for the department store and the izakaya blocks. The Tobu Tojo express reaches Kawagoe in about 30 minutes, which makes Ikebukuro the natural base for that day trip.

Toshima Ward's biggest festival packs the streets around Ikebukuro's west exit with around 15 mikoshi carried by more than 3,000 bearers, plus taiko and folk-dance stages. The Saturday-evening joint mikoshi parade in front of the station is the highlight; the Tokyo Yosakoi dance half of the festival follows in October.

Ikebukuro is the north side's answer to Shinjuku. There's a giant station wrapped in department stores, Sunshine City and the anime shops of Otome Road to the east, and a long list of business hotels.
