The Japan Folk Crafts Museum, the Mingeikan, was founded in 1936 by the philosopher Yanagi Soetsu as the home of the mingei folk craft movement. It shows anonymous everyday ceramics, textiles, woodwork and Korean and Okinawan craft in a beautiful stone-and-wood building he designed himself.
Insider tip
Wear slip-on shoes. You swap into slippers at the door. Check the open days for Yanagi's residence across the street, which opens only a few days a month.
