Tokyo Station
Marunouchi, Tokyo
Tokyo Station is the 1914 red brick station that anchors Marunouchi, beautifully restored and much more than a transit hub. Under it spreads an underground city of ramen streets, character shops and food halls.

Insider tip
Look up at the restored dome ceilings inside the Marunouchi entrances. For the facade at dusk, go up to the free KITTE rooftop garden. It's one of the best views in Tokyo.
What the guides say about Tokyo Station
JR Yokosuka line. From Tokyo Station, the Yokosuka line runs direct to Kamakura in about 55 to 60 minutes, calling at Shinagawa on the way (roughly 50 minutes from there). From the west side, the JR Shonan-Shinjuku line leaves Shinjuku and Shibuya and joins the same tracks south of Yokohama. Most of its services run through to Kamakura in about an hour, and the ones that don't mean a simple cross-platform change at Ofuna. Fares are roughly ¥1,000 each way on an IC card since JR East's March 2026 fare rise. There's no reservation and no pass. Just tap in.
Akihabara Station has the JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and Sobu lines, the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Tsukuba Express. From here you're in Ueno in about 4 minutes, at Tokyo Station in 4, in Shinjuku in under 20 on the Sobu Line (quicker if you change to the Chuo Rapid at Ochanomizu), in Shibuya in about 25, in Asakusa in about 5 on the Tsukuba Express and in Roppongi in about 20 on the Hibiya Line. Not many districts in Tokyo give you that spread from one platform, and it's the best reason to sleep here.
Ueno wins on pure utility, and it isn't close. Ueno Station is on the Yamanote Line, so the whole loop is direct: Akihabara in four minutes, Tokyo Station in eight, Shinjuku in twenty-five. It's also a Shinkansen stop, which makes it the best base in the city for day trips north to Nikko, Sendai or anywhere in Tohoku. And the Keisei Skyliner runs direct from Narita Airport into Ueno in 41 minutes, so you could be checked in within an hour of clearing customs, with no transfers and no luggage to haul through Tokyo Station.
